Free MIS Discovery Sessions for Schools, Academies & Trusts this September

On the back of a LOT of requests from schools, academies, partners and MATS, this September we were pleased to independently host a series of MIS Discovery Sessions.

With everything going on in the MIS market at the moment, schools have a real appetite for understanding all the MIS+Finance options available to them. They told us they’d like to take a look at all the MIS options available in England & Wales so this month we were pleased to host the three largest multi-phase, cloud-based school MIS+Finance suppliers: Bromcom, Arbor and IRIS Ed:gen.

Who were the Sessions for?

We hosted the MIS Discovery Sessions as virtual events which are completely free of charge to participate in and to attend. The sessions were open to all schools, MATs and academies in England and Wales, plus anyone else from the sector who’d like to find out more.

 

What did the Discovery Sessions cover?

We asked suppliers to talk about how their MIS meets the needs of key people within schools (including business managers, SLT, teaching staff, finance, students, governors, and parents) and asked them all the follow the same agenda to make it easier to compare.
But it wasn’t just about the software; we also asked suppliers to talk about their organisation and culture, and what it’s like to work with them – especially when it comes to switching MIS. There was plenty of Q&A throughout each day and the goal was to help everyone feel confident about the options open to them and the next steps.

EP. 041 – Business Leader Q&A: Chris Kirk, Director, CJK Associates

Our final #FinnemoreFireside of this academic year is with Chris Kirk of CJK Associates. Chris’ work is varied and he and his team support the mission of education by providing strategy, business planning, organisation design, operations, procurement and shared service advice to education organisations.

 

Chris works extensively with multi-academy trusts on vision, strategy, operating models and governance/finance reviews, so our Q&A session focuses on MATs and their needs, and what this means for suppliers – both now and in the future.

EP. 034 – Edtech Thought Leader Q&A: Mike Donoghue – CEO, John Taylor Multi-Academy Trust (JTMAT)

Next in the #FinnemoreFireside series is this brilliant chat I had last month with Mike Donoghue, CEO of John Taylor Multi-Academy Trust (JTMAT). It was a great conversation providing lots of insight into how MATs work and what is important to directors, leaders, governors, staff and learners.

To provide some background on Mike, he was appointed Headteacher at John Taylor High School in January 2010 and oversaw the first change to ‘converter’ academy status of an ‘outstanding’ school in Staffordshire in November 2010. That school plus 14 others now lie at the heart of John Taylor Multi-Academy Trust where Mike is CEO.

In September 2014 he became an elected member of the Regional School Commissioner’s (West Midlands) Headteachers Board, was re-elected in 2017 and elected to the newly-constituted Advisory Board in 2022. Mike has also been appointed to the DfE’s Secondary Headteacher Reference Group, an advisory panel assisting with policy and strategy decision-making.

It’s an insightful conversation which includes, amongst other things:

  • What it means to be a teaching school, and how fulfilling and valuable it can be
  • The challenges and opportunities that come with working outside your organisation
  • Growing into a successful MAT, and how do you define the perfect size
  • Equality of entitlement when it comes to professional development

EP. 030 – Business Thought Leader Q&A: Andy Kent, CEO & Founder of Angel Solutions

Towards the end of 2021, Nick caught up with Andy Kent, CEO and Founder of Angel Solutions who create innovative, web-based applications to help all levels of the education sector. Their tools are used nationwide, as well as internationally, from pupils, teachers and school leaders right through to local authorities and large academy chains.

 

Some of the questions Nick asked Andy include:

  • Your business is unlike many others as you really focus on innovation and culture; what does innovation mean to you?
  • What do you think is important for businesses and establishments to consider and take stock of right now, especially after Covid?
  • With so many new technologies entering the market, what will your approach be to these new technologies and when to introduce them?
  • What advice would you give to edtech businesses and startups?

 

We’ve split the interview into three parts to make it easier to digest. In part 1, Nick and Andy discuss innovation and culture at the circus (for those of you who have never visited, Angel Solutions offices are themed as a circus), and the impact of Covid on businesses.

Part 2 focuses on their ‘freemium’ model and advocacy, usage data and customer success, and showing value through usage and data. They also chat about changes in edtech and the challenge this creates.

Finally, in part 3 Nick and Andy cover ‘best of breed’ solutions, what’s new in edtech, and the future direction of Angel Solutions.

Getting the Product Management culture right in your organisation

Throughout many years of working with different companies, it is amazing how many people say the product sells itself. Yet the truth in many cases is:

  • The solution has cost far more than it had to because they didn’t truly understand their market needs, so compensated by building everything a customer wants.
  • They had no control on costs and this means no control on profit
  • The price normally was too low, as no understanding of the competition or value was understood
  • The product was not used to its full potential, so customers didn’t understand the true benefit
  • The business doesn’t understand the value of the solution, so direction of where the business is going is organic, with no true vision.

Getting the Product culture right

This is where Product Managers are able to add value to a company. They drive the commercial success of a product and lead the cross functional teams to deliver a solution that meets the needs of customers and drives the greatest growth for the business. It is an important organisational role that:

  • Sets the Vision and Strategy for the business solutions,
  • Communicates the roadmap
  • Defines the feature definition for a product or product line.
  • (The position may also include marketing, forecasting, and profit and loss (P&L) responsibilities. In many ways, the role of a product manager is similar in concept to a CEO of a solution)

Product managers provide the deep product expertise needed to lead the organisation and make strategic product decisions which is why they analyse market and competitive conditions. They lay out a product vision that is differentiated and delivers unique value based on customer needs. The role spans many activities from strategic to tactical and provides important cross-functional leadership most notably between engineering, marketing, sales, and support teams.

The Product Manager needs to lead cross-functional teams from a product’s conception all the way through to its launch. Therefore, they are the person responsible for defining the Why? When and What? of the product that the engineering team builds – and it’s ultimate success.

Are you paying too much attention to the hippo?

HIPPO is an acronym for the Highest-Paid Person’s Opinion . . . and they’re bad for business.


Hippo’s tell you their opinion and, because it’s easy to agree or too scary to challenge it, people nod along. Highly-skilled and experienced team members’ ideas are instantly devalued purely because they’re paid less than the Hippo.


It throttles innovation and it needs to stop.


But what to do instead?


Take the Google approach and test everything. Every idea deserves to be tried or challenged, and when you can back it up with data from testing you’ve got a really good chance of being heard over the roar of the hippo.
